Nutrition the Neglected Discipline by Physicians
Optimal nutrition is foundational for preventing chronic illnesses and living a vibrant long life, yet a recent Medscape online survey by U.S. physicians believe only half of their patients would benefit from working with a nutrition professional to improve their diet! What is even more astounding is that out of all the 1005 physician specialists that responded to the survey, gastroenterologists said that only 43% of their patients could benefit from nutritional counseling!
This trend should give everyone cause for alarm! There is an epidemic of chronic illness and obesity in this country and perhaps this lack of preventative care is the reason the US health care system ranked DEAD LAST in a comparison of 1o similar wealthy democracies by the Commonwealth Fund – in fact the US was so far below their peer countries that they were considered in an (unfortunate) class all their own!
I thought that a comment made from Stephen Devries, MD ( Preventative Cardiologist / Associate Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) was the most relevant regarding the Medscape study “…the true number of patients that could benefit from nutritional guidance, including the conditions of hypertension, high blood fats, digestive disorders, food allergies, is 100% and needs to be included in the care of EVERY patient.”
